Norwegian composer Øyvind Torvund's music brings together disparate materials in inhomogeneous contexts: sounds borrowed from rock or everyday life in a chamber piece, simplicity in a complex structure, improvisation coexisting with rigorous notation, music allied to projections, seriousness in counterpoint to humor.
"My main concern," he says, "is to keep an open mind as to what can take part in the making of a musical work, and to combine different genres and qualities of elements... Contrasts, juxtapositions, and sometimes antagonistic perspectives interest me because I am convinced of the richness of what goes on around and underneath the ordinary musical framework, and that many unconscious forces remain to be invested."
