Stefano Gervasoni studied composition at the Milan Conservatory with Luca Lombardi, Niccolò Castiglioni, and Azio Corghi. His encounters with Brian Ferneyhough, Peter Eötvös, and Helmut Lachenmann, as well as Gérard Grisey and Heinz Holliger, were decisive in his career.

Several monographic CDs published by Winter & Winter are devoted to his chamber music, for instrumental and vocal ensembles and three new CDs were released in 2020 (by Kairos, Naïve, and Stradivarius).
