Marco Stroppa studied at the conservatories of Verona, Milan, and Venice. From 1984 to 1986, he studied computer music, cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence at M.I.T. From 1982 on, he worked at IRCAM as a composer and researcher at the invitation of Pierre Boulez. He directed the music research department from 1987 to 1990, before dedicating himself to composition, research, and teaching. His uninterrupted contact with this institution has been a determining factor in his approach as a composer.
Often grouped around thematic cycles, his work is inspired by the reading of poetic and mythical texts and by personal contact with performers such as P.-L. Aimard, C. Daroux, F. Hölscher, T. Miroglio, J.-G. Queyras, B. Sluchin.
