Jupiter, Pluto and Neptune: three milestones in Philippe Manoury's epic journey in the land of electronics, three founding stones of mixed music in real-time. In the 1980s, during research carried out at IRCAM in collaboration with the scientist Miller Puckette, Manoury imagined the concept of "virtual scores", i.e., the detection and monitoring of the performer's playing by the machine, in order to be able to integrate certain data from the performance into the composition. A revolution for computer composition, for composition as such, carried out with the complicity of the soloists of the Ensemble intercontemporain. Sonus ex machina is also the story of successive interpretations and the constantly evolving state of technology. Forty years after its creation, Sonus retains the exciting feeling of a "first time".
